CHRISTIANS ASSOCIATION, CAN CONDEMNS TERRORISTS KILLING OF RCCG PASTOR, DEMANDS SECURITY PRESENCE AT WORSHIP PLACES

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has described an attack on worshippers in Ogun State as an assault on religious freedom in Nigeria.

CAN called on the various security agencies to increase vigilance in places of worship.

SaharaReporters had reported that a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), in Abule-Ori, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State was killed by suspected terrorists.

It was learnt that the gunmen also kidnapped seven worshippers after invading the church on Saturday.

On the same day in another incident, 12 pastors of the Salvation Army, a baby and a driver reportedly died in an accident near Benin City, Edo.

However, CAN president, Daniel Okoh, on Wednesday in Abuja, condemned the recent attack on the worshippers while he commiserated with the Salvation Army in Edo State.

Okoh asserted that the leadership of CAN received the news of the tragic incidents with great shock. He urged the government authorities to thoroughly investigate the accident at the church to prevent a repeat.

Okoh commended security agencies for their swift response.

He said; “We mourn the loss of the pastor and condemn the kidnapping of worshippers who were simply exercising their religious freedom to worship. We urge the various security agencies to increase vigilance on places of worship during religious gatherings and provide adequate security measures for worshippers.”

“CAN urges citizens not to be discouraged by the recent losses but to continue to look up to God for help. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and churches,” he added.
